For all the time it takes to get the 57 miles to LAX from ONT, you should rent a car. Public transportation in America is OK, but in LA it stinks. Depending on trains schedules, you might be stuck out in Ontario if you aren't careful. Best bet is to rent a car.
If you are meeting friends at LAX, why aren't you flying there? It's usually cheaper.
I'll try to make this simple and easy to understand. To travel from Ontario Airport to LAX by public transportation you would first take a taxi from Ontario Airport to the Metrolink Station in Upland, California, (just a few miles away).
Board the Metrolink train to L.A. Union Station. Trains run between every 30-60 minutes depending on the time of day. The fare is $7.25 each way, and takes about an hour.
From Union Station board a LAX Flyaway bus at the Union Station East Portal Plaza to LAX. Buses depart every 30 minutes on the hour, and the fare is $3.00 each way. During peak traffic hours the trip takes about 45 minutes.
Welcome to Los Angeles, and enjoy your stay here.
Mercy me this is a tough one, let's see 1. a stranger 2. with luggage 3. going totally across the City of Los Angeles....Yikes, I would bet this will take you 2 or 3 hours depending on connections...no single thing does that...(except a car on Interstate 10). OK catch the Union station shuttle from the Ontario Airport to Union Station and the LAX flyaway bus from Union Station to LAX.-----Please post back later and let us know how this worked, I am curious myself...Good Luck...
To L.A. peeps----- could there be a direct shuttle between Ontario and LAX???Seems like there should be but I never heard of it...!!!
Upon arriving at ONT, catch the Omnitrans Rt.61 westbound to the Pomona Transcenter. (Cost $1.25 until 7/1 then 1.35. Trip time approx. 1 hr). From the Transcenter, catch the LA bound Riverside line Metrolink (7.00 fare, approx 50 min trip) from Union Station, take the Flyaway Bus from Union Station to LAX,(cost 3.00/ approx 45 min).
This is a trip assuming a m-f trip and depends on how early your flight arrives. If you are arriving on a weekend or later than the last metrolink train to LA, then use www.mta.net for bus transit/fare from pomona to union station.
I have included the links for each route that I mentioned.
So to answer your question, a total transit time of 2hrs 35 min with a fare of 11.25.
Ontario airport is 35 miles from downtown Los Angeles.
However, Google Maps is more precise, with exact distance
between the two airports at 54.1 miles. Car: 1 hour and 2 minutes. Public transportation, much longer:
RAIL CONNECTIONS FOR ONTARIO AIRPORT Passengers arriving at Ontario Airport can transfer to Ontario-area rail stations or Union (Rail) Station in downtown Los Angeles. For transfer to Union Station, take a shuttle van, a taxi or rent a car.
For a list of local shuttle van services, go here: http://www.lawa.org/ont/dtd_Van.cfm
For access to local Amtrak or Metrolink trains, take a taxi ($10-$15) or use the local bus system, Omnitrans. For access to Omnitrans, take the free airport shuttle bus to Economy Lot F and tell the driver you wish to get off at Omnitrans, There, you will find the #61 bus which will take you to the local Amtrak station or the Metrolink station as follows:
For Amtrak, take the #61 westbound to the corner of Euclid and Holt (9 minutes. $1.15 fare). Continue walking 2 blocks west and then 2 blocks south to the Amtrak station at 228 S. Palm. NOTE; The Ontario Amtrak station does not have trains that go to Los Angeles! You can only go east from this station. (There is only one Amtrak train per week that arrives in Ontario from Union Station and that is on Fridays at 2:30 pm. The fare is only $7 to $9 for the one hour ride: a true bargain!)
For Metrolink, take the #61 bus eastbound to the Ontario Mills Mall and connect with the #75 northbound to the Metrolink station (total time: 34 minutes, fare: $2.30). Metrolink runs limited trains from Ontario to Union Station, Monday through Friday, only. Trains leave Ontario station for L.A.â™s Union Station at 8:36 am and 3:28 pm for the 1 hour trip costing $7.75 for adults and $4 for seniors and children. Trains depart Los Angeles Union station for Ontario, Monday through Friday at 1:15, 4:15, 4:55, 5:25, 6:05 and 6:35 in the afternoon/evening. For local Ontario bus information, go to mta.net.
Have fun! Typical situation in America, public transport sucks. Rent a car.
